Broken mirrors and fingernails |
July 2, 2008
Today on the way home I was ran off the road by a blue BMW driven by a young guy with brown hair. He came flying around the corner on my side of the road and would have hit me had I not swerved over in time. Swerving over caused me to side-swipe a large plastic trash can sitting out very close to the road. The impact with the trash can snapped my passenger side mirror right off.
I immediately stopped my car and watched in my rear-view mirror as the blue BMW rounded the corner on down the road. He didn't bother to stop. I got out and picked up the undamaged trash can and put it back in the resident's yard in the proper upright position. Luckily it was empty so I didn't have to pick up any trash.
I looked over at my poor mirror just dangling there by a couple of electrical wires. I unplugged the connector and put the mirror into my car. I got back in and headed home.
On the way home depression set in. My car is an '07 Mustang, so I figured this would cost me at least a couple hundred bucks to repair, possibly more.
Once I got home I took the door panel off and found the pieces of plastic that were broken. I carefully unscrewed them from the bolts while starting to realize the situation might just be repairable. I studied the parts for a while and it seemed simple enough. Just to be sure I removed the panel from my driver's side door to have a look at how it was bolted together. I spent a couple minutes test-fitting the broken plastic peices back into their proper positions. Hopefully I could find my super glue inside.
I came into the house and dug through my stuff until I found the super glue. It was pretty old and none came out when I squeezed it. I cut the tip off to allow more flow, but still nothing came out. So I went upstairs and asked my little honey if she had any super glue. She said she did. I said "Yay!".
She went into the bathroom and came out with nail glue from her fake fingernails kit. My first thoughts were that it would never work. She insisted this kind of glue worked very well on nails, and to just try it. So I did. I glued all the b0rken plastic parts back where they went and set the mirror aside to dry for a while.
After time to dry, I put the bolts back into the mirror and re-attached it to my car. Looks like it never even happened.
