Web hosting woes..

April 9, 2005

Whatever you do, do not use Geekhosting.com.

When I first got the hosting account many months ago everything seemed fine. But more and more I saw my site getting slower and slower. The mornings were the worst. They would perform backups every day and my site was basically inaccessible during the backup period. People wrote to me and asked why my site was so slow. It was embarrassing.

So then one day last week I went to my site and found it was 'suspended', at least that's what it said on the page they had put up in place of my site. I wrote to them but no one bothered to respond for over 24 hours. I got no warning this was going to happen and no explanation after I found it. Finally I got a reply. They said they had been unable to bill my credit card for the amount of $32. Now that just made me mad. If I had known there was a billing issue I could have resolved it. I have a job and a savings account and $32 isn't that hard to come up with, even if my Mastercard was maxed out.

So anyway, knowing they weren't the best web host in the world, I decided to get a new hosting account elsewhere. A guy at work told me about Eleven2.com. I signed up and moved in. I have to say for the $6.95/month I am paying it sure is a nice hosting account. I got MySQL 4.1, PHP 4.3.11, a GB of space and 50GBs a month of transfers. All of Destiney.com only does about 12-15 GBs of transfers per month so I'm set for a while as far as bandwidth goes. I have unlimited databases, and they even have Postgres.
